Title of Document: POINTING, ACQUISITION, AND TRACKING FOR DIRECTIONAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS John Robertson Rzasa, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Directed By: Professor Christopher C. Davis, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Directional wireless communications networks (DWNs) are expected to become a workhorse of the military, as they provide great network capacity in hostile areas where omnidirectional RF systems can put their users in harm’s way. These networks will also be able to adapt to new missions, change topologies, use different communications technologies, yet still reliably serve all their terminal users. DWNs also have the potential to greatly expand the capacity of civilian and commercial wireless communication. The inherently narrow beams present in these types of systems require a means of steering them, acquiring the links, and tracking to maintain connectivity. This area of technological challenges encompasses all the issues of pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT).

متن کاملSpace Laser Communications: Systems, Technologies, and Applications
Laser communication links in space are attractive alternatives to present-day microwave links. This tutorial describes the basic concept and the functions of an optical terminal on board a spacecraft. It points out the differences between free-space optical links on one hand and glass fiber systems and microwave directional links on the other hand. The requirements on data transmitters and rece...
متن کاملOn Wireless Sensor Networks
This paper investigates the research issues in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which is a new computing paradigm that emerged from the fusion of the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and Ad hoc networks technologies. WSNs provide network connectivity without the aid of any preexisting networking infrastructure. Very small sensor nodes, capable of sensing, data processing...
متن کاملAdaptive acquisition and tracking for deep space array feed antennas
The use of radial basis function (RBF) networks and least squares algorithms for acquisition and fine tracking of NASA's 70-m-deep space network antennas is described and evaluated. We demonstrate that such a network, trained using the computationally efficient orthogonal least squares algorithm and working in conjunction with an array feed compensation system, can point a 70-m-deep space anten...
متن کاملOff-axis catadioptric fisheye wide field- of-view optical receiver for free space optical communications
We propose a wide field-of-view optical receiver design based on a fisheye lens and an off-axis catadioptric structure for free-space optical communications. The design utilizes a novel fisheye lens group to compress a wide field angle into a narrow field angle and produce the appropriately collimated light that can effectively be coupled into the following aperture of a catadioptric telescope....
